U.S. is reported to be drafting limits on new China-made data-center optical transceivers
Reuters, citing four people familiar with the matter, reported that the FCC is drafting a measure that could restrict imports of new China-made data-center optical transceivers. The report concerns optics used for fiber links inside data centers and says the measure could still change, be delayed or be shelved; China's embassy and affected optical-module makers have responded publicly, and no final public rule or effective date is available.
This review did not locate a final FCC rule, press release or Federal Register effective notice for a restriction on new China-made data-center optics; the FCC's earlier Covered List component proposal is not the same as the measure Reuters described. On August 4, China's embassy in Washington responded via China News Service, urging the U.S. to listen to the business communities' objective and rational voices, stop smearing Chinese firms or threatening sanctions, and saying China will respond with all necessary measures to any action that seriously harms its interests. On August 5, investor-relations offices of Zhongji Innolight, Eoptolink and T&S Communications told the China News Service business channel that the FCC has not issued a restrictive document in this area and that they are not commenting or are closely monitoring.
